Avian Influenza August 2022

Article Status:
Current

Avian influenza, or bird flu as it is commonly known, has recently raised its ugly head again in several places in the South West (SW) region this August and is presenting a significant problem in Mid Devon.

There are 3 outbreaks in the Cullompton/Tiverton area. It is important that all bird keepers follow the rules governing their birds as set out in the following link:

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/avian-influenza-bird-flu

All birds are vulnerable to infection with this virus. Good biosecurity is essential and must be maintained by all bird keepers.

Biosecurity means separating your birds from the virus so they do not become infected. The virus is primarily transmitted in bird faeces. Thus, it is very important to prevent them coming into contact with wild bird faeces, especially from waterfowl. Waterfowl such as ducks are very dangerous because they can carry the virus without exhibiting any clinical signs at all. It is also advisable to keep your birds housed or in a protected run as long as it is not going to present welfare issues in hot weather. These precautions are very similar to the instructions given out for the winter housing order and it is so important to protect your own birds and others in the SW.

If you require further information, please do not hesitate to contact your Veterinary Practice, especially if your birds look poorly, or worse have died unexpectedly.
