Ram Fertility

Our sheep-enthusiast vet Miranda will be presenting at AHDB and RamCompare's event at Dupath Farm, Callington:

"Fertility of breeding stock and understanding how EBVs aid ram selection decisions – RamCompare with a Strategic Farm Focus" 

This will be an afternoon/early evening event: full details are yet be finalised; keep an eye out for updates!

Event objectives include:

  • Gain an understanding of EBVs for ram selection decisions, using data/results from Dupath Farm and the RamCompare project
  • Ram fertility and quarantine – the importance of conducting annual ram MOTs to prepare for a successful breeding season whilst protecting flock biosecurity with new purchases
  • Ewe flock fertility – getting two-tooth ewes back into shape post-lambing
  • Efficient ewes = efficient system – a focus on ewe weight and body condition to inform future flock management decisions

Foot Trimming Course

We are running our first foot trimming course of the year!

These courses are tailored to those who want to learn about lameness in their cattle and also to the farmers who want refresh their knowledge on foot trimming. 

Areas to be covered are:

  • Assessing Mobility and identifying lameness
  • Anatomy and function of the foot as it relates to trimming and lameness
  • Dutch 5 stage foot trimming
  • Lameness prevention
  • Block Application

 

Location : Mid Cornwall

10:00am start

Price : £195 + VAT 

Lunch and refreshments included. 

 

Along with Spike-one of our Vets, the course is ran by NJB Hoofcare which owned and operated by Neil Barrett, the chairman of the national association of cattle foot trimmers,  He is a Category one trimming, completing the  Dutch diploma,whiteline method. He typically covers Somerset, Monmouthshire, Gloucestershire and surrounding counties.

Safe and Responsible use of Medicines Course

In the World there is considerable pressure and awareness to reduce antibiotic use both on farm and in hospital due to the ever relenting fight against antibiotic resistance. Those of us involved in the production of high quality dairy products and meat are part of the 'One World' to reduce the use of antibiotics. We regularly run Safe and Responsible Use of Medicines courses to discuss not just reducing antibiotics but how to adopt alternative strategies to reduce the reliance on them. This course forms part of the requirements for the red tractor farm assurance scheme.

As of the 1st of  November 2021, all beef and sheep farmers under the Red Tractor scheme must do a medicines course. Once you have completed the course, it will last up to 3 years. 

This course is not limited to those who are Red Tractor assured, if you are not part of the scheme and would just like to widen your knowledge on antibiotics, feel free to book a place. 

The Course covers; 

  • Safely administer veterinary medicines to animals under your care
  • Describe the Describe the difference between vaccines and treatments and the different legislative classes
  • Describe basic differences that exist between different classes of antibiotic and the need for veterinary guidance for their use
  • Describe the basic classes of anthelmintics and the need for veterinary or SQP guidance on their use
  • Understand the actions of an NSAID and when they should be used.
  • Store and maintain medicines on farm in accordance with legislation and farm assurance requirements.
  • Understand the responsibility of those administrating medicines to farm animals 

The course is £50pp Plus VAT - We encourage further members of your farm team to attend the course and offer these places at a discounted price of £15pp.

Lambing Course

This highly practical workshop provides guidance on how to correct malpresentations, and tips on how to improve ewe and lamb survival in the days around lambing.  You will need waterproofs and wellies as this course is hands-on!

  • Malpresentations and correction - practical session
  • Prolapses and other problems
  • Care of the recently-lambed ewe
  • Care of neonatal lambs to improve survival
